I need some advice

Postby Elvizle » March 8th, 2010, 1:45 pm

Ok so my wife wants me to take pictures of our daughter for Easter. So I need some advice on how to shoot it. I have 2 flashes and 2 umbrellas. I'm going to use a white blanket as the backdrop and also I will be buying some props for Easter such as eggs bunnies etc. My question is how should I do the set up? where do i put my lights and how far should the lights be from her? also should i use my kit lens or my 50mm. Any advice would really be very helpful

Thank you

Honestly, if it were me, I would take this shoot outdoors.

First of all, the weather is great and you should take advantage of it. Not only will the baby be fussy indoors in an itchy, annoying dress (I could be wrong about this, I've never worn a dress), she will get impatient and try to grab the equipment. Whereas outdoors she won't be easily distracted and you can have her attention by having your wife assist you with the baby.

Second, think of it this way, green grass and a tree with your daughter sitting on the ground or standing in front of a bed of flowers with Easter eggs randomly all over the ground. The scenario is much more realistic than a white background shot.

And lastly, to answer your question, you would probably need only one flash and without any modifiers... maybe a CTO gel, if anything. You can leave the stands and umbrellas at home. Just ask your wife to hold the flash and aim it at your daughter.

This is how my 'day 65' shot was done.

All I used was a circular polarizer filter on my lens and a flash. Stop down the exposure a little so the background can look bluer and darker. Use the flash as fill light on your daughter. That's it.

And I almost forgot, I'd use the nifty fifty simply because it's sharper than your kit lens. I would also use it for a tight-ish crop. Shoot a little far from her and some distance between her and your background that way there's a nice separation.

I'm definitely gonna have to agree with Sean. That's actually the first thing that came to mind with the Easter themed photoshoot. There are also a ton of free outdoor activities/events for the kids during that time. Great excuse to go out with the fam.

I found this site that has free events for kids. They have Easter Egg Hunts all over NYC from April 10th-12th (Saturday - Monday).

Elvis, not sure which part of brooklyn you live at, but there are a bunch: DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Fort Greene and Bay Ridge.

Sean, Kissena Park might be closest to you.

Here's the site: http://mommypoppins.com/ny-kids/free-weekend-events-for-kids-in-nyc-april-10-12

P.S. Don't forget to bring your CAMERA! :yessir:
